Ex M23-11 // James Hunt // Nelson Piquet // Jochen Mass

James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Jochen Mass really need no introduction given the accolades they have achieved over the years. Hunt and Piquet both excelled in Formula One with the former winning the 1976 World Championship and the latter taking the title three times in 1981, 1983 and 1987. Jochen Mass whilst a victor in Formula One arguably had more success as a sports car driver with countless wins over nearly 3 decades including victory in the 1989 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The McLaren M23 also needs little introduction Introduced in 1973 with a total of just 13 cars produced they raced competitively in Formula One to the end of 1978 winning two drivers championships and one constructors championship with 16 wins, 14 pole positions and 10 fastest laps.

McLaren M23-11 was first raced in the 1977 South African Grand Prix by Hunt where he finished 4th and also used by the reigning World Champion at Long Beach (7th) as well as Spain, Monaco and Belgium (Practice only). The car was then campaigned by Mass, Brett Lunger and the aspiring Nelson Piquet who as a rookie raced the car in 3 Grand Prix in 1978 - his debut year. It was then acquired by British racer Dennis Leech who used the car for the Aurora AFX British F1 series and from whom these wheels were directly obtained.

Today they are presented as a pair of side tables with simple acrylic discs providing a surface upon which to place drinks or to display items. Supplied with a letter confirming their authenticity from Dennis Leech they represent a great opportunity to acquire an attractive talking point with James Hunt and McLaren lineage.

This lot is located in the United Kingdom. Atmospheric imagery for display purposes only.
